Ramshorn Snail

The Ramshorn Snail is one of the most prolific breeders you could have in your aquarium.   It is also one of the most effective algae eaters.   Because it is such a successful breeder, if left to it’s own devices, it will quickly take over your tank, but for many species it is a tasty snack.

The Ramshorn Snail is an efficient algae eating machine and this is the primary reason we allow them in some of our tanks.  Secondly they are tasty food for our Red Eared turtles and dwarf blue lobsters, who will ignore their regular food if there are snails around to eat.

As an hermaphrodite, the snail will breed very quickly, so unless you have a predator or other use, be prepared for them to quickly become very numerous.   They have a strong appetite and will get rid of all algae in no time. They also clean the surface of the plants.   They will travel around the aquarium, eating rotting leaves, algae and also carcasses that have been missed.

Natural predators for the ramshorn snail are clown loach, bettas, crayfish, turtles and most gouramis (not the dwarf gouramis).

We sell Ramshorn snails about 1/4″ (some may be bigger)  in groups of fifteen+
